Description:

My Grandfather had his own Bocce Court in his back yard. He was a legend in his time as being the best Bocce player in New York.
Many tournaments were arranged by different Bocce Clubs and Gamblers and were played in his back yard. Some of the best players from Italy came to Brooklyn just to play against him hoping to beat him. He was known as Don Fillippo of South Brooklyn.
When I was very young I would spend hours with him, raking his court. I loved rolling the small Bocce Balls since I was able to hold it in my small hands. I could not grip the larger balls so I would kick them along with my foot. This brought laughter to my Grandfathers face.
I can still remember the first time I saw a guitar and heard it being played. It was at night in his backyard with a crowd of people with a man singing and playing his guitar. Years later I learned that the man singing and playing was the famous Italian singer, Carlo Butti.
My Grandmother told me that large sums of money were wagered on these tournaments. At the end of the tournament everyone would drink wine and sing Italian songs into the night as Grandma and my aunts cooked dinner for everyone.
